Just purchased my midweek season pass for Kirkwood for this season. I would have gone for the full pass, but my finances will not allow it. Last season was my first time to ski on a regular basis, I skied a total of 15 days and I learned so much about the mechanics and form of skiing from taking a class or two and in addition to this I finally recieved my Avalanche I certification which hopefully will allow me to pursue backcountry skiing (no lifts, no ski patrol) without getting killed. Backcountry skiing involves attaching mohair skins to your skis and a special type of binding that allows the heel to articulate to allow upward travel on skis. This is a grueling activity to say the least, but the individual is rewarded by thousands of feet of unfettered and pure powder. The main hazard to this activity is the much higher probablilty of an avalanche releasing, but the sport is no more dangerous that something such as footbal or even hunting. I purchased a new set of skis this summer and cannot wait to cruise the powder with them. Anyone here in the Bay Area is more than welcome to join me any weekday this winter. Also, I get a discount on tickets so give me a shout! Look for the guy in the white helmet with a blue racing stripe. :-)

Show us a picture of where you'd like to live and tell us why you want to live there.

If I could choose any place to live (I"ll limit it to the US for now) I'd definitely choose Gunnison, Colorado of all places. It's similar to Aspen minus the expense of living, snobbery and terrible art galleries. It's a cross between a college town, a ranching community and a ski town. The local college shown above is Western State College otherwise affectionately known as Wasted State. Like all small towns everyone knows everyone and when there is a house party you can see an age range from 20 to age 40.
It's a small town with a pop. around 10,000 people. There is a little diner off the main drag that starts getting crowded around 9 on weekends, two grocery stores and a small airport that can handle larger jets in the wintertime. A few miles away from town is the infamous Hartman's Rocks, known for it's raging keg parties and excellent mountain biking and dirtbike trails. Thirty minutes away is the wold class ski town of Crested Butte. A charming little burg, and possibly one of the best ski towns in America. Another wonderful feature to the town is world class fishing and boating at the Reservoir just outside of town.
If you are even remotely into the outdoors you can consider this place to be one of the most well situated towns for any activity. Hunting, climbing, fishing, off-roading, backpacking and of course backcountry skiing. Gunnison is surrounded on all sides by federal land. Enjoy the following pics.
If you guys get a chance please check out Rando Steve's blog on backcountry skiing the Tetons. Tons of hair raising photos of arguably some of the more extreme routes in the lower 48. Kinda makes me want to move back there and be a ski-bum/dirtbag for the the rest of my life
It's going to snow a predicted THREE FEET at kirkwood this week. I laughed with joy when I saw this. Perhaps the subaru will get the chains slapped on it for once (like it needs them). I'm going to giggle like a schoolgirl the entire way up. This is absurd.
Dropped the skis off today to have the edges sharpened thanks to a icer, errr packed powder season at Kirkwood. When we flipped the skis over a small, but nice core shot was noticed. Grrrr. Gotta be more careful over those rocks. If anyone from the bay area is interested in going skiing for the day please give me a shout. I go weekdays usually. Pray for snow!
